My son wants a rat for his seventh birthday.
Is this a good pet for him?
Mice and rats can make great pets. They are easy to train and
like to do tricks. Mice and rats also have short reproductive
cycles, so children can get an upclose look at animal life. However,
be aware you may find yourself with a lot more animals than anticipated.
How can I tell a good rat from a bad one when
picking one out at the pet store?
Shop for a rat as you would any other animal. Pet rats that have
been bred should be healthy. Check that the rat is clean around
ears, eyes, nose and under its tail. Check its body and make sure
it doesn't have bumps under its fur. Also make sure its teeth
and nails aren't too long. And most importantly, choose one that
likes you.
What do mice like to eat besides cheese?
Although mice will eat cheese, it's really not a favorite food.
Mice can eat a variety of foods from crackers to stale bread,
fresh fruits and vegetables, and even cooked meats. Remember to
always remove any uneaten fresh foods. They may rot and cause
a health hazard. Never give a mouse sweets, chocolate, or dairy
products. Be sure that the bulk of its diet comes from a nutritionally
complete diet consisting of seeds and grains.
Are mice dirty?
Unlike wild mice and rats, pet mice are clean and attractive.
But to keep your mice clean you must take good care of them. Their
cages should be cleaned regularly. Feed them on a consistent schedule.
Always take any uneaten fresh foods away before they spoil. In
all, a mouse's cage should stay as clean as the rest of your home.
Can I teach my rat to come when I call him?
Rats are highly trainable. Training your rat can teach it some
tricks and provide bonding between the two of you as well. To
teach your rat its name, give it a treat and call it by name.
After a couple of times, hold the treat a bit away and call its
name. Do this until it seems to master the trick. But be careful
that your rat doesn't get used to food as a reward or you'll have
a fat rat.
