Can I keep more than one hamster or gerbil in the same cage?

Hamsters are solitary animals. They are happier living by themselves. If you want to keep more than one gerbil, we recommend you choose them from the same litter; two females are best.

Are gerbils nocturnal?

Gerbils are neither nocturnal (active at night) nor diurnal (active during the day). Instead, they have brief periods of rest and activity throughout the day and night. This allows you to enjoy your gerbil just about anytime.

Where do hamsters like to live? I want mine in my bedroom, but my mom wants them outside.

Keep your hamster indoors. There are many kinds of cages you can buy, but make sure whatever you choose is large enough for your hamster to exercise. Hamsters are active and need play room. A hamster wheel is essential so your pet gets enough exercise.

What can I feed my hamsters and gerbils besides packaged gerbil food?

Gerbils can survive with little food or water in desert and tundra environments, so feeding them is quite easy. Gerbils can get all their nourishment from dry food, providing it is nutritionally complete. Gerbils don't need a lot of water, but it is good to keep a fresh supply in their cage at all times. Gerbils will also eat vegetables, but feed these sparingly, as they could give your gerbil diarrhea. Hamsters will eat almost anything, but the best choice is a nutritionally complete hamster food. It provides all the nutrients your hamster needs. Their diet may also include grains, rice or dry seeds.

What do gerbils like to sleep on?

Gerbils and hamsters need plenty of sleep to live to a ripe old age and size. Provide your animal with cotton, or recycled newspaper for a bed. A variety of boxes and nests are available, however filling them with cedar is not recommended.

I noticed my gerbil thumping his leg. Is that normal?

What you observed is the interesting way in which gerbils communicate with their cage mates. Usually males will rapidly thump their hind legs to warn others of danger.
